Tableware.

Abstract: This research develops a novel way of rethinking cultural and social behavior using computationally augmented artifacts. These ‘instruments’ provide various types of auditory feedback when manipulated by certain actions within social contexts, such as a bar or dining space. The goal is not only to observe how social interactions are affected by the manipulation of augmented artifacts, but also to observe how the sounds and manipulations affect psycho-sociological changes towards more collaborative social relations during the processes of participatory sense-making.

Prototyping Process

- Direct Mapping

Each linear/non-linear movement is directly mapped to various synthesizers.

- Concurrent Coordination.

We have created mappings for concurrent coordination between participants through simple expressions of the sensor features of multiple cups. For example, denoting the current tilt of the n-th cup, as Tiltn, a continuous value between 0 and 1 that indexes the concurrent tilting (or drinking) of cups between guests, could be expressed as Tilt1 X Tilt2 X Tilt3 X Tilt4.

*We use the Wekinator application, which allows training and real-time output over OSC.
